It’s the middle of the winter, and it’s cold. The scene out the window looks like a Christmas card, it’s so picturesque snow blanketing the world, flurries gently floating down.
This weather is perfect for curling up by the fire, wearing your favorite pajamas and eating a dish of your favorite comfort food. There’s nothing quite like it the warm, creamy, cheesy, stick-to-your ribs treats that are simply made for cold winter days.
Unfortunately, if you search for “comfort food recipes” on a generic site, you’re likely to come up with lots of recipes full of white sugar, white flour, canned soups, and other junk food. That’s not very comforting — it’ll make you feel sick when you’re done!
Enter Wholesome Comfort.
These are comfort foods like your grandma used to make. They’re tried-and-true, down-home, real comfort food. They’re full of cream, butter, cheese, and other real foods. You’ll find no white flour or white sugar here. Best of all, the book includes some tips on making over your favorite comfort food recipes, and includes a healthy “cream soup base” recipe to be used in place of any canned soup! Or, of course, consumed straight and enjoyed fully.
Are you ready for comfort food that’s truly comforting? Food that will make you feel as good as it looks and tastes, with no guilt or after-effects. Food that nourishes while it comforts. Food that’s reminiscent of perfect family favorites…and which will become new family favorites.
Dive in, and be comforted!
This book is 42 recipes of delicious, down-home comfort food with no junk and no compromises. Many recipes are allergy-friendly, too, as you can see from the symbols above! Each recipe is marked with cute little icons to let you know what it’s free of, too. The book also contains 30 full-color photographs of the recipes.

Wholesome Comfort Whole Foods to Warm Nourish Your Family Modern Alternative Mama In the Kitchen Book 5 edition by Kate Tietje Benjamin Tietje Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks
Growing up with a mom who didn't cook that much and or used the microwave way too much, Ive had to teach myself how to cook. Ill do searches on like allrecipes and ill have to search through a lot of canned or cheater versions. I wanted something better. This book has the "classics" but in the way they were intended to be. I cant wait to try the Soaked Bread and the desserts.I even learned a few things on sprouted grains that I had no idea what it was before.

Wholesome Comfort Whole Foods to Warm Nourish Your Family Modern Alternative Mama In the Kitchen Book 5 edition by Kate Tietje Benjamin Tietje Cookbooks Food Wine eBooks Reviews
I was very excited to be able to review this cookbook, as I love cookbooks and frankly, I am addicted to cookbooks. I especially enjoy cookbooks that are on the lines of how I believe in feeding my family. This cookbook is tops. It is exactly what the title says....comforting, whole foods. Many of the recipes will sound very familiar to you. They are the everyday meals that people eat, but the recipes are using good, old fashioned, real food. I have tried a couple of the recipes so far and they are easy to follow, easy to have on hand ingredients. Definitely a cookbook with good, down home cooking meals to feed your family!
I now have the perfect resource for helping me prepare the comfort foods we love in a much healthier version. I loved finally learning more about soaking grains. Having good recipes that are not full of the allergy inducing additives is such a blessing.
I have been browsing "real food" cookbooks for months and end up frustrated most times because the recipes call for random ingredients that I'm never going to find in rural Iowa without it being a special trip to the big city on an online order.
If you're a real person, looking for real food recipes that are still easy to follow and understand, then this is the cookbook for you!!
Disclaimer I received this book free in exchange for an honest review. (Yes, I love it anyway!!)
I (Ryan's wife) was very excited when I received an ebook copy for review. I'd tried a few of Kate's recipes that's she'd listed on her website before and had enjoyed them all. During the cooler months, I'm called to these warming, comfort foods - but I've always battled with how to make them in a healthy way that will actually nourish me as well as taste reminiscent of my childhood. Kate's book was wonderful in guiding me through how to make comfort foods from scratch! I thoroughly enjoyed the two different recipes I tried - one of which was a recipe that was new to me, the other was a favorite comfort food of mine growing up. Both were a success! I'm looking forward to making more meals from it - this is the perfect time of year!!
These recipes will seem familiar to you--banana bread, biscuits, fudge, chicken pot pie, spiced blueberry muffins, etc. What Kate does is save you tons of time. She has created real food recipes that are delish and will give you back your favorite comfort foods in a way that you can feel good about--in moderation, of course. For the price, this is a must have if you want to feed yourself and/or your family wholesome, real foods. Highly recommended. Next on my list to try--gingerbread!!
I really enjoyed this cookbook. I love to cook and bake and I also love reading. This cookbook fit the bill for all three. It was a very enjoyable read. I also tried out several of the recipes and look forward to many more. The Chicken and Dumpling soup was a hit with the family and the Almond Flour Dinner Rolls turned out so light. I was impressed with the simple directions. I found the recipes to be complete and accurate. Everything is soy free and she has recipes specifically free of common allergens, ie dairy free, gluten free, egg free and nut free. Do note that they are not all free of allergens but there is a selection of recipes fore each. It is clearly marked in the table of contents which recipes are free of what.
I did receive a free copy of this book but I feel it is worth the price to purchase. I will definitely look for Kate's other cookbooks in the near future.
Upon opening the book and perusing the table of contents I was pleasantly surprised. It's not often that you will find comfort for recipes that are made with whole foods.
Since it is the holiday season, the first recipe I tried was the green bean casserole-made with fried onions from scratch! That definitely made a lot he difference. The onions were a pain to cook, but they were worth it, trust me.
Up next was the meatloaf. Even my husband, who puts salt and condiments on everything, was impressed. Putting ketchup on this would be a shame.
There are several other classic comfort foods here that I have not tried, but are next on my list. Two of them being the chicken pot pie, and chicken and dumplings. If you are into whole foods and crave some comfort, this book rocks.
Disclaimer I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
I sometimes get intimidated by the fancy cookbooks that list out-of-place ingredients and techniques for good ole comfort food.... often to the point of giving up on making something that I'm craving.
No worries here! Clear, pretty simple (I'm a very basic kinda cook) recipes for delicious classics.
And, being a SoCal gal, getting this book just as the weather has cooled is perfect! Most of the recipes here are dishes I only consider in winter.
I particularly like that Kate tagged several recipes in each category as "Kate's Kitchen Classics". I'm lazy, so I tend to go straight to those since I know they are the best-of-the-best. I don't cook/eat any fowl, so it's nice that several main dish Classics are non-fowl (yes, I like beef/pork/seafood... just NO FOWL). Too many cookbooks assume that everyone loves chicken and are overloaded with chicken recipes.
Disclosure I follow Kate's wonderful Modern Alternative Mama writings and got my copy of Wholesome Comfort free, for agreeing to submit a review. Having done this, I'm off to buy a copy of the predecessor book Real Food Basics!
