Sticks up, Amber Johnson is the best character in this hockey romance book by Kelly Jamieson. Hard-working, smart, level-headed, independent, responsible, nice, no patience for prima donnas. Heck, I want to be part of her posse. She is an older college student and part-time waitress who catches the eye of the hero of the story, Duncan "Army" Armstrong, just hours after he breaks it off with a model siphoning his professional athlete paycheck to fund her designer label fetish.Duncan continues his role from book one of the Aces Hockey series, Major Misconduct, as the genial, laid back hockey player from Wisconsin who proudly drives his truck around Chicago and is most comfortable in a ball cap and flannel shirts. Amber calls him "farm boy" for a reason.
Amber is surrounded by people who don't quite measure up, most of all her parents. She doesn't even want to talk about her dad, and her selfish, status conscious and uncouth mom reminds me a little of Mrs. Bennett from Pride and Prejudice, albeit in a contemporary setting.
As expected from a Kelly Jamieson book, the fraternization among the hockey players provides great comic relief. Also typical in a Jamieson book is a little bit of self-assessment by the H/h. Understandably, Duncan isn't sure that women like him for himself rather than his wallet, and because of her parents, Amber is self-reliant to the extreme while possessing a few, tiny trust issues. Both carry some baggage, and it is perfectly understandable that two people in a new relationship aren't dumping the suitcase in the middle of the airport. The pace of the relationship felt natural to me.
What brought this down to four stars were two things: 1) the whiplash experienced at the end regarding Amber's parents, and 2) too many sex scenes. I was skimming them because they weren't adding any emotional intimacy to the story. However, I have to reiterate what a terrific character Jamieson created in Amber. If I could have a do-over on my 20s, I think I want to be her.

Duncan Armstrong, NHL star, is tired of dating models who are more interested in his pocket book than the man he really is. After another breakup he meets Amber, a waitress at the Sin Bin which is owned by one his team mates. Amber is not necessarily his type but the easy banter and feel of normalcy he feels while talking to her has him making a move.
Duncan didn't realize that Amber's second job is as a model. Misunderstandings and mixed signals put Duncan and Amber on a rocky path but once they get past it, they blossom. Amber isn't sure she has time for a relationship, Duncan is determined not to let her go. However both have hangups they carry and it threatens to tear them apart.
Delightful, the chemistry is intense between Amber and Duncan. I thought this had a realistic view on how a famous rich athlete would be weary of others in the same spotlight. Amber is trying hard not to repeat her mothers past by protecting her own. Excellent entertainment if you like a sports read.
From the opening scene, my heart felt for Duncan. He's loved and lost, or at least tried to love, wanting to find that special someone but it just doesn't seem to happen for him. Women can tell a mile away that he's one of those guys that wants to do things for people, to take care of them and it's cost him a lot of trust in others.
Amber's past has taught her to rely on no one but herself. She doesn't like or want anyone to do things for her, afraid that she'll become dependent and then the floor will drop out from underneath her.
I loved everything about this story! Neither of them wants to be involved with each other, but the heart knows what it wants and it doesn't give up easily. Kelly does a great job of weaving their story into a believable love to last a lifetime. I love the Aces series and can't wait to read the next one!
Duncan and Amber both have a jaded view of the opposite sex. Duncan has been used by woman (most recently his ex-girlfriend, Melissa) for his money and fame. Amber has a distrust of professional athletes and it stems from her own father. Amber has had to make her own way since her father was sentenced to prison 3 years ago. Amber's mother has accepted any and all financial help Amber has sent her way to the detriment of Amber. Duncan has no idea the dynamic these women have - he just knows he likes Amber. Both have insecurities and have to battle them throughout this book. Amber was hard to understand at times. Her stubbornness to accept help bordered on stupidity. Her inability see Duncan was just a nurturer was selfish most times. Duncan did start to call her on her words and actions and I totally got that. Doing something nice for someone should not be grounds for that person to give you a hard time in lieu of saying thank you. I liked how both of them screwed up but acknowledged their parts in the mix-up. Good addition to this series. I liked how the ending showed Amber getting her life in order and Duncan going after what he wants. Nicely done.

I received Top Shelf - Book 3 of this series as an ARC and loved it. After completing it, I decided to read the earlier books in the series to see if they were just as great. I'm so glad I did! Duncan and Amber's story is HOT! The Aces Hockey team sure knows how to steam things up in the bedroom!
Duncan is such a great hero. He's handsome and wealthy, but also down to earth and relatable. He's vulnerable and sweet. The exact opposite of what I expected. Amber is sweet, smart, and hard-working. I loved both main characters. I'm looking forward to reading more from Kelly Jamieson.
Audiobook review Kasha Kensington does a great job bringing these characters to life. Each character has a distinctive sound. I'd recommend the Audible version.
